The GGSL Evolves...Again!
Last year the GGSL was able to seamlessly add four new teams (two each at the OT and Masters level), and the fall season again saw a great many amazing soccer moments. While 2022 was undoubtedly another successful year, your Chair and Divisional Convenors initiated discussions with Team Managers and interested players about how to make our beloved league even better. The discussions focused exclusively on “What can we do as a league to give as many players as possible a great soccer experience?” As a result of this feedback, we are pleased to announce several important changes to the GGSL, effective for the Fall 2023:
Summary of Key Changes
1. Divisional size set at 6 teams
2. Introduction of a new Masters “A” (50+) division
3. Transition issues for teams & players
1) Division Size: With dome bookings on 3 pitches over 3 time slots, by far the best divisional size for the GGSL is 6 teams. This allows the 3 divisional games involving 6 teams to be played on 3 consecutive time slots on the same pitch. Teams playing an unequal number of late games will be a thing of the past. Six team divisions also permit easier scheduling with each team playing the other an identical number of times.
2) New Masters A Division (50+): With the league currently offering only 2 levels of play (OT & Masters) it became quickly apparent that improving the GGSL requires the introduction of a new Masters A division. This introduces a third level of play and provides much needed flexibility for players (and teams) to play in a division most appropriate for their skill level. When these changes are implemented next fall the GGSL will feature 3 divisions: Masters A, Masters B, and a 40+ OT division.
Many teams will not be affected by this measure (ex. most existing Masters teams will stay in the Masters B division, and most OT teams will stay in the OT division). For teams which are affected, specific details will be communicated by the Divisional Convenor and your Team Manager in due course. Teams in the Masters A division will experience some change, as this division will be composed of teams from both Masters (4 teams) and the OT Division (2 teams).
3) Transition Issues: There will be some limited player movement to assist with ensuring the current OT teams and current Masters teams in the new Masters A division are on a relatively level playing field.
A word on timing - this transition is significant, so it was important to provide time for everyone to understand the changes and adjust to the new framework. As a result, implementation will take place at the start of next season (October 2023). It will be business as usual for our 2023 Spring season.
Finally, one or more new convenors will be appointed prior to next season to ensure each division has its own convenor.

Summary:
We are confident based on extensive discussions leading up to this announcement that this is the right plan, at the right time, for the GGSL. We are happy to announce changes which will give more players than ever the chance to play at their appropriate level, and against teams that they match up with well. The GGSL has had a great many changes over the years since its formation in the fall of 2007 and we believe the important changes announced today position the league for a continued bright future!
